Hi, my name is Justin, I am the machinist that will be making your new fire piston at the Fire Popper manufacturing plant.
If anyone has any suggestions or ideas that they would like me to try out or to share with others, you can post them here, I will try to check in every few days or so and reply back to you as soon as I can.
Currently we are tooling up to make our standard model piston out of polycarbonate. Once the production begins on the poly models we will begin tooling up for other materials, like aluminium and brass, due to the requests for other materials. We are also offering custom fire pistons to you, although this will cost more due to; material cost, (if you want something exotic like titanium, magnesium or stainless steel) tooling requirements, and designing time. It is rewarding to have a piston that is of your own creation that will represent your personality.

I was wondering if you had tried any in stainless steel yet?
Specifically something in 304 or 321 stainless steel?

I have but the price we have to charge per unit is high enough that most people go with one of our current models. If you are interested in a stainless model we will get one made up for you

I doubt it's terribly original in concept but do you/have you made them with base of the piston being hollow with a threaded cap for tinder storage?
If I want a price on a stainless one should I just go through the custom thing or do you have a rough price already?

I could do that for you but our standard size model is not large enough to contain enough tinder to light a fire with. If this is something you would want we would have to make the entire unit larger in diameter and in length. An increase in diameter would increase the required force to operate the Fire Popper and an increase in length could make the unit difficult to carry. If you are still interested in your idea we can make it for you but it would be a custom model which would allow you to make any change you request as long as it is within our manufacturing ability.

we have not thought about building a piston into a knife but now that someone brings it up i dont see any reason why it couldnt be done. If i were to get enough interest in such an item we at fire poppers would be more than happy to construct a batch for the masses. however if it were something you would like to have made as a custom item for yourself then let me know and I will be happy to go over the details with you. Thanks for asking and the interest in Fire poppers brand fire pistons!
